#JeffcoFlood Colorado National Guard Here to Assist

We have Colorado National Guard Soldiers out in #JeffcoFlood areas to help with rescue and recovery efforts throughout the County.  This includes everything from sand bagging to getting residents and vehicles out of flooded areas.  The vehicle you see in these pictures is a Light Medium Tactical Vehicle.  Its main mission is to transport soldiers and cargo.  While here in Jefferson County, it can be taken off road, it's versatile and a high profile vehicle making it ideal for going into areas with deep flooding.  The vehicle is strong enough to tow a semi-truck.  So whatever is needed during flood recovery efforts, the Colorado National Guard is here to help.  We thank them for everything they do.

Flood Response Efforts in the Cameo Subdivision, Arvada

Members of the Incident Management Team were out in the Cameo Subdivisions in Arvada yesterday assessing structure damage and planning for ways to assist homeowners that have been impacted by flood waters coming from the Croke Canal. The flood waters carved a new path through the neighborhood streets spilling into yards, and rushing against homes.

Where homes have a slight bit of elevation the damage was minimal. For others it was potentially significant. In some cases running or standing water has damaged homes and rendered them uninhabitable. Some homeowners have already placed piles of wet carpeting at the edges of their driveways. The friends and neighbors of one elderly homeowner were busy pumping water from the property and were actively mitigating further damage by building berms covered with plastic to herd flood waters away from the house.

Team members talked to property owners and determined where sandbags might be placed to route the flood waters away from homes that were not already damaged. Water ran several inches deep across the area as they considered plans for another possible round of rain which might increase water flows. Crews and supplies were ordered for delivery to the neighborhoods for later in the day.

Working in an interagency effort with employees from the City of Arvada, IMT crews went to work yesterday afternoon when piles of sand and bundles of sand bags arrived. The supplies arrived about the same time as a thunderstorm dropped moderate rain on the already water-soaked area. Crews worked in the rain trying to divert the floodwaters that continue to threaten dozens of homes in the neighborhood. These actions represent efforts to minimize further damage to neighborhoods already hard hit by this historic flooding event.

#JeffcoFlood 9/14 Morning Update

Additional rain is expected throughout the weekend.  The ground is completely saturated, so any additional rain could cause a flooding event.  Please be aware of the risk for flash floods, rock slides, road wash outs and additional flooding.

The Jefferson County Type III Incident Management Team is now being assisted by members of the Northwest Colorado Type III Incident Management Team.  The combined IMT is working tirelessly to assist in managing flood response and recovery efforts throughout unincorporated Jefferson County.

Photo taken in the Bear Creek Canyon area.

Here are the latest road conditions:

Hwy 72 west of Blue Mountain Estates to Pinecliffe remains closed due to landslides and parts of the road are washed out.
Twin Spruce Gap Road from Coal Creek Canyon to Hwy 119 remains open.
Closed: Portions of Indiana from 72th north to 120th, Candelas Park just past Hwy 96.
Closed: Portions of Alkire between 72nd and 96th due to water over the road.
Leyden Dam is letting out a lot of water right now to release pressure on the Dam.  Additional road closures in that area.
Access to downtown Evergreen is shut off.  The 73/74 intersection bridge was assessed and determined to be safe and is open.  Downtown Evergreen is closed from the bridge to Meadow Drive due to water over the road.  The road and area buildings are being assessed for damage.
Two access bridges to Hwy 74 are closed and currently being assessed for safety:
  • Forrest Hill Bridge
  • Independence Trail Bridge
Golden Gate Canyon remains closed from Hwy 93 to Robinson Hill Road.  Blasting will be taking place throughout the day, so do not be alarmed if you hear loud noises.  Please do not call 911 unless you have an emergency.

Blasting in Golden Gate Canyon

Crews will be blasting in the Golden Gate Canyon area today (Saturday, 9/14) from Hwy 93 all the way up to Crawford Gulch.  It is anticipated to last most of the day.
Residents should be aware they will hear loud noises, but do not need to be alarmed.  Please do not call 911 if you hear the loud blasting sounds, only if you have an emergency.

Upper Coal Creek Canyon Road Updates

Twin Spruce Road is now open to the public. There continue to be damage in the area.  Please exercise extreme caution when travelling in this area.

Residents of the Upper Coal Creek Canyon community can use Twin Spruce Road to access highway 119.
Highway 72 west from Twin Spruce Road is closed to Pinecliff.  In that area the road is reduced to a single lane dirt road, easily prone to wash out.  Colorado DOT has closed the this portion of the highway and is telling residents to only enter the area 'at their own risk'.  A hard road closure is being enforced on highway 72 from Ranch Elsie Road East to Blue Mountain Estates.
